Anti-Oppressive Approaches to Adverse Childhood Experiences in the Context of Parental Substance Use (and other "Household Challenges").

Abstract Gradient

What People Say:

I had never heard of ACEs before, and I didn’t realize how much they show up in the lives of the youth I support in outreach. It was eye-opening, and I appreciated how the session challenged the way we often talk about families — it really made me think differently."
Ontario Youth Worker

This 2 hour introductory session on the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study helps participants understand ACEs while contextualizing parental addiction (an ACE) within the broader societal conditions that affect health outcomes. Attendees will gain insights into how ACEs shape outcomes for young people and learn to view parental substance use through a lens of systemic impact, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges families face.

Outcomes:

  • Build foundational understanding of ACEs and their impact on youth.

  • Explore how systemic barriers shape and compound ACEs.

  • Explore tools to critically examine how ACEs research and related policies may reinforce bias and overlook systemic and structural factors.
