International Overdose Awareness Day: Peer Support In A Box Campaign

For Youth who've lost a parent to an overdose

What is It?

In the lead-up to International Overdose Awareness Day (August 31st), Starlings Peers are launching a national campaign to reach youth across Canada who have lost a parent or caregiver to substance use.

Our Goal? Grow national awareness of the often-invisible grief youth face after losing a parent or caregiver to substance use, and to decrease the shame, isolation and loneliness that can follow.

Through the creation of a peer-led zine titled From Us to You and distribution of 100 Hope Kits (or more) across Canada, we aim to ensure that no young person feels alone in their grief and knows that tomorrow can be better! Each kit will include art, letters, and reflections from peers who’ve been there, a tangible reminder that their story matters, and they’re not alone.

Starlings Peer

We (young people who have lost a parent to drugs) need a way to break the cycle of isolation... a place where our emotions can be expressed without fear of judgment. A way for us to process pain, share experiences, and find comfort in knowing that we are actually not alone. Peer support can break the cycle of isolation.
