Trauma-Informed Care (and Beyond): Making TIC Approaches Relevant to Youth Affected by Parental Substance Use Stigma

Abstract Gradient

What People Say:

As a social worker in child services in Ontario who often goes into homes due to parental addiction, I learned practical ways I can engage with young people during an intervention that can support them and their parents. It was eye opening and helpful.
Ontario Social Workerer, 2022 NACY Conference

This 2 hour introductory training explores trauma-informed care (TIC) principles in the context of supporting young people who are affected by the stress and stigma of a parent’s substance use.  Using a relational and anti-oppressive approach that centres young people’s emotional needs and lived experiences, this workshop focuses on supporting participants to:

  • Explore trauma in the context of the physical and emotional care needs of young people navigating systems

  • Review TIC principles while critically examining gaps and barriers to implementation of TIC in practice

  • Identify and practice strategies that shift from resilience narratives to healing justice, supporting youth to feel safe, seen, and supported in systems that often fail them.

This training is good for:

  • individuals aware of TIC but eager to move beyond surface level understanding

  • individuals ready to self reflect on their capacity to apply TIC principles for people with substance use challenges in the home

  • Individuals eager to support the healing of families

This training is available in person or virtually and comes with:

  • pre-training session consultation

  • pre-training survey to identify needs and knowledge

  • post training survey

  • training toolkit
