In this 2.5 hour training, participants will increase their understanding of provincial mandated reporting requirements related to parental substance use, develop strategies to balance legal obligations with trauma-informed, family-centered care, and utilize ethical decision making tools and strategies to maintain or increase help-seeking behaviour with young people and their families.

  • Identify current Alberta policies that affect how frontline staff can engage with families where substance use exists

  • Understand the historical context of policies and practices that can impact present day policies

  • Better understand the needs of families and how to prevent harm within the context of current policies and practices
