Stress, Stigma, and Safety 101: An Introduction
In this introductory 90-minute interactive workshop, peer leaders draw on lived experience and research to illuminate the often-overlooked realities of young people impacted by the stress and stigma of a parent’s substance use. Together, we explore trauma-informed, anti-stigmatizing practices to build trust, foster connection, and support healing in ways that honour youth voice and rights
Outcomes:
-
Recognize the Impact of Relational Trauma: Understand how the stress and stigma linked to a parent’s substance use affect a young person’s emotions, behaviors, and capacity to seek out support.
-
Understand How Stigma Shapes a Child’s Hope, Identity, and Meaning: Explore how societal judgment toward families affected by substance use can diminish a child’s sense of safety, belonging, and future hope, and how natural supports can support youth in shaping a positive identity and finding meaning in their experiences.
-
Practice Stigma-Free, Trust-Building Care: Learn practical strategies to offer care that reduces shame and nurtures healing.
